Iraqi Airways – The possibility it may soar towards European Skies again!
Iraqi Airways, affectionately known as the "Green Bird," is on a mission to lift the European Union's airspace ban that's clipped its wings since 2015. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani is leading the charge, making this issue foremost, of critical importance, something that will improve Iraq's global standing and economic resurgence.
Grounded from European skies due to safety concerns, Iraqi Airways has faced a challenging decade. The ban not only tarnished the airline's reputation but also hindered Iraq's connectivity with the West, impacting tourism and business. Determined to reverse this, the Iraqi government has embarked on an ambitious journey to modernise its aviation sector.
Iraqi Airways has expanded its fleet with 13 state-of-the-art aircraft, including six Boeing 737 Max jets, two Boeing Dreamliners, and five Airbus models. This infusion of modern planes is part of a grand plan to boast a fleet of 31 cutting-edge aircraft by 2027.
But the upgrades don't stop at new planes. The airline has also renewed its partnership with SITA to overhaul passenger processing and baggage systems, ensuring a modern, efficient travel experience. The implementation of SITA's system is set to accelerate passenger processing at Baghdad and Basra airports, while advanced baggage tracking offer the same peace of mind to travellers they experience elsewhere.
Navigating the Path to Europe
Demonstrating unwavering commitment, Prime Minister Al-Sudani recently engaged in discussions with the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Joined by IATA's Vice President, Kamel Al-Awadhi, the talks centred on the plan to meet and exceed international safety standards. Al-Awadhi highlighted that 56% of the corrective measures have been successfully implemented, signalling that the project is soaring on the right trajectory.
Restoring Iraqi Airways' access to European airspace is more than a matter of national pride, it's a strategic move to rejuvenate Iraq's economy. Enhanced air connectivity is poised to attract international investors, boost tourism, and create a plethora of job opportunities. Moreover, it symbolises Iraq's change, and a new commitment to global standards and its readiness to re-engage with the international community.
With modernisation efforts in full throttle and high-level negotiations gaining altitude, the Green Bird is on a promising flight path to once again grace European skies.
As Iraq continues to invest in safety, service, and infrastructure, the dream of seeing Iraqi Airways' emblem soaring over Europe is fast becoming a reality.
