Iraq and Czech Republic deepening ties

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani received a warm welcome in a frosty Prague during a visit aimed at deepening ties between Iraq and the Czech Republic, lots of mutual friendship and respect, with national anthems played and a review of the honour guard before both leaders took commemorative photos.

The visit is more than just diplomacy—it’s another example of Iraq’s growing role on the international stage. Al-Sudani and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala are set to expand cooperation across security, economic, and environmental sectors with a commitment to stability and prosperity.

Iraq also thanked The Czech Republic’s support in combating terrorism and rebuilding key sectors. Security cooperation remains a strong pillar of the relationship, as Iraq benefits from Czech expertise through NATO and EU advisory missions.

Trade and investment discussions focused on oil refining, renewable energy, infrastructure, and industry, with both sides eager to create new opportunities for business growth. Iraq presented its visionary “Development Road” project, a transformative transport corridor expected to attract even more foreign investment and strengthen economic ties with Europe.

Agreements on air transport and environmental collaboration are also on the table, with Prague offering its expertise in managing air and water quality and advancing sustainability initiatives.

This visit should see Czech companies to expand into Iraq’s markets just as British ones have in recent months, Key negotiations between Iraq’s Sovereign Guarantees Committee and the Czech Export Guarantee Agency (EGAP) aim to provide the financial assurances needed that will help drive these large-scale projects forward.

Iraq also, naturally looks to sell more crude oil and petrochemicals while exploring the Czech Republic as a military partner, with The Czechs offering technical support to enhance the Iraqi Air Force’s capabilities. At the same time, both nations are stepping up their efforts to combat organized crime and improve security cooperation, as formalized in a new memorandum of understanding between their respective interior ministries.
